(In that case, I'd be better off selling this amp and keeping the older one.) Anyone here understand the Vox valve reactor circuit well enough to predict what a tube swap would do? A web search on this topic has turned up nothing. I'd just go ahead and try this, but the cabinet is sealed and I'd rather not pry it apart if this isn't the droid I'm looking for. I don't know whether this swap would fix the issue, do nothing at all, or mess up the amp's modelling characteristics. So the question is, would swapping in a 12AY7 or a 5751 tube for the amp's 12AX7 improve the headroom? These new Valvetronix amps moved the tube into the preamp section but that doesn't mean they use it like a standard preamp tube. On the older amp, those models stay clean until the gain is substantially higher than on the VT40X. I'm more interested in clean sounds, and it has noticeably less headroom than the AD30VT on my two favorite models, the Fender Bassman and the Vox AC30 without TB. The biggest is that, while it has a much better distorted/overdriven/classic rock sound than the older amp, that's not really what I'm after. The VT40X has a lot to recommend it over the AD30VT, but it's also coming up short in a couple ways. A few weeks ago, a great deal on an almost new VT40X fell into my lap, and since this amp is three generations "more advanced" than the AD30, I snagged it. Look no further.I've had a Vox AD30VT for a long while and really like it. If you want a first amp for you teenage son or daughter or a practice amp for you ageing rockstar. I have marked it down to '4' from '5' due to my comment on the instruction booklet. When connected to the Internet via a laptop the manufacturer has made a wider range of sounds available. It has the ability to connect to a laptop via a USB socket but no cable is provided. My one criticism is that the handbook is and poor assumes that the guitar is a teenage whiz-kid who know all about connecting mobile 'phones and laptops in this respect it is no different from any other electronic gadget, but I have been playing since the 1960s and I am going to need help to get the best out of this amp. it is a 'modelling amp', ie it has a lot of programmed different sounds, including those produced by particular full-sized amps, eg 'Vox AC30', as well as various 'stomp' pedals such as flanger, chorus, phaser and overdrive - this means that a new guitarist can get used to the sounds these pedals normally produce without spending upwards of a £100.00 on each. It has a valve instead of just solid state and this adds to a warm tone. it has a headphone socket to avoid annoying the neighbours. The 40watt would be suitable for use in a large room and the the 100watt for gigs. It is nicely made and, physically an ideal size for practising in the bedroom. There are three models of the amp: 20watt, 40watt and 100watt versions, appearing to differ in volume only.
